We went to the Santa Barbara Zoo last weekend for Ben's birthday and I sang 'mommas takin' us to the zoo tomorrow, zoo tomorrow, zoo tomorrow...and we can stay all day' the whole way know the one?  It was full of penguins and elephants and monkeys and we loved it! The Santa Barbara Zoo is doing something right and has called by many 'the best zoo in California' despite competing with the big dogs like the famous San Diego Zoo. I think they say this because it is overlooking the ocean, so so stunning, not too big not too small and has all the animals you want to see at a zoo. We were only there for three hours and we were able to see everything, go on a train ride around the zoo, have some picnic snacks and take in a dino show. It was the perfect amount of time for Everett and not even one meltdown.

Everett would have been happy looking at pigeons but he seemed to particularly pay attention to the giraffes and the penguins.  I loved the flamingos and the elephants and just now when I asked Ben his favorite he said the bunny rabbits.  ha......ha.....

Going to the zoo, like most things is exponentially better when you have a kid.  It was so fun to see him run around and take it all in and it was genuinely exciting to show him the penguins eating fish and the snow leopard that had the same name as him.

Zooday success.

Ben is Twenty Seven

It's Ben's 27th Birthday today!

He had to work all day so I sent him off with a batch of cupcakes to share with his friends.
We half celebrated on his day off last week and he chose to go to the zoo because he is a good dad and knew Everett would love it.
The other half of the celebration will be tonight and will involve cheesecake, candles, a babysitter and a show!
Ben isn't very big on birthdays and it always seems to be either bad timing, or being apart from each other or not enough money every June 24th and I always am feeling like we didn't do enough to celebrate how great he is.

Because he really is the greatest.
He is such a good dad, it is my favorite thing to watch those two together.
He is a kind, sweet and hilarious husband who constantly puts Everett and I first.
Everybody likes him.
He is dark and handsome and so funny once you get his sense of humor.
He is quirky and folds laundry ever so perfectly, doesn't like ketchup with his fries and played video games professionally.

So happy birthday Ben, you are without a doubt, the best there is.

A Photo Series 'A picture of my child once a week, every week for a year'

He is starting to be silly on purpose, just to make us laugh.

I couldn't decide which I liked better, color or black and white, so here they both are.

Sister Sister in Santa Barbara

My little sister Carly came down from Palo Alto last weekend, making it one of the best! I have been getting a little homesick, both for family and our little 'home' in Provo, so this visit was just what we needed.  My cousin also drove up from Orange County so it was basically a family reunion! We shopped our little hearts out (well kind of) I'm just going to say it-shopping with a toddler is maybe the worst thing ever. I said it and I meant it. Love my child, but he is not a great shopping companion to say the least. We went to the Ventura beach, and although not the hottest day, and major seaweed, Everett was fully entertained and the Lifeguard hit on Carly and so basically a win overall.
We took a day trip on the guys day off to beautiful Santa Barbara.  We went on a quest to find this epic rope swing a-top a hill overlooking the whole city, but the rope had been cut by some obviously horrible people, but the view and kodak moments redeemed the expedition. Ps-Everett will probably never use or know what the phrase Kodak moment is eh?

^^^ A fav pic as previously seen here.
^^^My boys and above mentioned sad little once-was rope swing

Next we checked out the SB pier/wharf which had only $2 dollar parking (fist pump) and gorgeous gorgeous views.  We walked down State Street (a cute street of stores, restaurants, street performers etc.) and ended up grabbing some dinner at CPK so we could watch the Heat lose horribly, making it a near perfect day!

^^^You guys, I die!

I am so so happy Carly came and visited, I propositioned her many times to just stay the rest of the summer with us!
Sisters are the best!

A Day in Santa Monica

As a long time lover of the show Private Practice and an eventual lover of Addison Montgomery, I really wanted to go to Santa Monica, where the show 'takes place'.
Dream complete!

It was a really nice day, which probably explained the masses on masses of people.  We gave up our dreams of ice cream when we saw the line wrapping around the corner and I have never seen a more crowded beach but I kind of like the hustle-and-bustle of places like this-minus the absence of the ice cream. Everett loved looking at all the dogs, the people and the aumesemnt park-ish rides. We strolled down muscle beach, checked out some babes, strolled some more on the pier, took some pictures and headed back to our 12 dollar parking spot!

Then we headed over to the 3rd Street Promenade, which is blocks and blocks of shops, pedestrians only.  It was fun to people watch, Everett jammed out to all the street musicians, and we eventually found a cute little greek place to eat right on the street, probably my favorite part of the day.

Ben usually works all day every day out here, so it was such a treat to spend all day with him and friends in beautiful Santa Monica! We were practically Addison, Jake and Henry! (minus the red hair and ethnicity)

Everett: 15 Months

I thought after the one year mark, I would just do these updates every three months, lesbe honest-mostly for me.

Well if I thought Everett was busy at 10 or 11 months, that was nothing on how busy he is now.  I spend my days chasing him around, making sure he doesn't seriously injure himself and trying to keep up. Even though, I am completely exhausted at the end of the day, I love how busy, curious and active he is. He is learning and soaking up so much and I love watching him quite literally learn something new every day.  He is also learning about his emotions and how to control them-ie-the tantrum meltdown, so that has been ' fun'!  I love seeing his personality develop, he is mostly really happy as long as he isn't bored and we are out-and-about. Everyone always comments on his great smile and all his blonde hair. He loves to be around people, laughs easily and also can be really sensitive and nervous around new people or situations. And no, he is still not sleeping through the night.

The ocean and the sand (a recent discovery from moving to California)
The splash pad (every. single. day.)
He loves all dogs and he loved the kittens at my parents house and would even say 'kitty cat'
His nightly baths
Breastfeeding (ya ya, we're still doing that)
Sitting on ledges ???
Napping (he has been napping so so well the last 3 weeks-knock on wood!)
'helping' sweep or do laundry
Watching people cook or do dishes-like obsessed.-babies are so weird
His favorite foods are frozen yogurt, chocolate chips, watermelon, yogurt with strawberries and banana with peanut butter.
Getting chased, tickled, or playing peek-a-boo behind walls, ledges, anything really.
Barney episodes (the only way we can drive anywhere without him crying the entire time is to put some Barney on the ipad)
Eating toilet paper and throwing things in the toilet
His sippy cups
Putting lotion on (himself)
US. Still very attached to his mom and dad
His stuffed lion he calls kitty cat.

Any form of constraint-carseat, stroller, carts, highchair, carriers.  He ALWAYS wants to walk on his own now so that's.........awesome
Getting his diaper changed
Sleeping. He is still waking up multiple times a night. kill me.
Getting dressed
When either Ben or I walk out of the room, so dramatic.
When he can't open or lift something
Eating (he doesn't necessarily dislike eating, but doesn't eat very much)
Driving-still hates it.

Best Friends
 Bester friends
He loves dolly the puppy.

A Photo Series 'A picture of my child once a week, every week for a year'

Dads are the just the best.

This photo is now one of my absolute favorites. It was not planned or staged and Ben didn't even know I took it, just a perfect moment captured.

Ps-I left my camera battery charger in Canada, so they will be iphone pictures for the next little bit.
